SM Steel Acquires ISO 19443 Certification, Strengthening Quality Competitiveness in the Nuclear Industry

SM Steel, a stainless steel manufacturer under the SM Group (Chairman Woo Oh-hyun), announced on the 14th that it has obtained ISO 19443 certification, the international standard for quality management systems specific to the nuclear supply chain established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The nuclear industry demands an exceptionally high level of safety and reliability. A conventional quality management system such as ISO 9001 alone cannot fully address the unique requirements of this sector. ISO 19443, therefore, builds upon ISO 9001 and introduces additional requirements tailored to organizations supplying products and services important to nuclear safety. It covers aspects such as product traceability, prevention of falsification, risk-based accident prevention, and establishment of a strong safety culture.

To obtain the certification, SM Steel conducted a comprehensive review of its quality management system, strengthened risk management across key production processes, enhanced documentation and verification procedures, and upgraded its internal audit and corrective action processes to meet the stringent requirements of ISO 19443.

Jin-Yong Jeong, Head of SM Steel’s Stainless Steel Division, stated,

“This certification officially recognizes SM Steel’s advanced quality management system that meets the demands of the nuclear supply chain. We expect it will contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of domestic nuclear component suppliers.”
He added, “We will continue to pursue product differentiation through additional certifications for high-quality special steel grades and expand our presence in overseas markets.”
