SM Steel Begins Mass Production of DUPLEX 2205 Stainless Steel Plates

Full-scale production at Gunsan plant through strategic partnership with POSCO

High-strength, corrosion-resistant material to meet demands in shipbuilding, offshore, and chemical industries

SM Steel has successfully started the mass production of DUPLEX 2205 stainless steel plates, a high-strength and highly corrosion-resistant steel, marking a major breakthrough in the domestic duplex stainless steel market. Previously reliant on imports, Korea's demand for this high-value-added material can now be met with a stable domestic supply, thanks to the production system now in place at SM Steel’s Gunsan plant.

This achievement is the result of close technological collaboration with POSCO and SM Steel’s proprietary production facilities and process know-how. The development is expected to reduce Korea’s dependence on imported duplex steel plates and help establish a more stable supply chain.

DUPLEX 2205 is a duplex stainless steel composed of approximately 50:50 austenitic and ferritic microstructures. It offers superior mechanical strength, excellent corrosion resistance, high weldability, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion compared to conventional stainless steel. Due to these properties, it is widely used in marine structures, desalination plants, petrochemical facilities, industrial piping, tanks, fittings, and flanges, particularly in extreme environments.

Until now, most domestic demand had been met through imports from Europe and Japan due to technical constraints. However, long lead times and high costs have posed significant challenges for manufacturers. SM Steel has overcome these limitations through the use of POSCO’s high-quality raw materials and technical support, combined with its own advanced production technologies—such as precision flatness control via super levelers, heat treatment, automatic grinding machines (AGM), and improved pickling processes. The company’s strengths in surface quality control have been key to achieving successful localization.

Jamie Jung, Head of SM Steel’s Stainless Steel Business Division, stated,

“This mass production success is the result of POSCO’s technological leadership and unwavering support, along with SM Steel’s facility competitiveness and on-site expertise.
We are currently supplying in the 10–35T thickness range but plan to expand this to 6–80T in the near future to meet the growing demand in applications such as chemical tankers, LNG carriers, pipes, and fittings.”
