SM STEEL Obtains 9 Classification Certificate
- Secured position as
the only stainless steel plate manufacturer in Korea with all 9 major classification
certificate
- SM STEEL Capable of Supplying Stainless Steel Plate to Domestic Shipbuilders for All LNG Carriers Contracts.
SM Steel (CEO Kim Ki-ho), a manufacturer specializing in stainless steel plates, announced on 7th March that it has obtained all 9 classification certificate from IACS (International Association of Shipping).
Classfication certificate is granted after a review of the fulfillment of the regulations required by the shipping associations in the fields such as ships and maritime structures. Therefore, in the case of ships ordered from a specific country, the qualification to deliver shipping materials is granted only if there is a required country's classfication certificate.

Starting with RS (Russia) in April 2021,
SM Steel has obtained all 9 classification certificate over a period of about one year,
including KR (Korea), RINA (Italy), CCS (China), DNV (Norway/Germany), LR (UK),
BV (France), ABS (US), and NK (Japan). “Currently, SM Steel is the only
manufacturer of stainless steel plate in Korea that has successfully acquired all 9 classification
certificate”, an official from SM STEEL explained.
"This means that domestic
shipbuilders will be able to supply high-quality, high-end stainless
steel plates for all LNG carrier cargo warehouses won by various
countries," said Song Kwan-bok, director of SM Steel's STS Research
Institute. With the acquisition of the nine major shipbuilding and marine
structures at home and abroad, SM Steel will be able to participate in major
shipbuilding and marine structures projects in earnest.
SM STEEL, an affiliate of the manufacturing division of SM Group
(Chairman Woo Oh-hyun), has been supplying 90 billion won (25,000 tons) worth
of stainless steel plate to local and overseas market since it completed its
stainless steel plate plant in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, in June 2020. In
particular, by introducing the world-class leveler, SM STEEL is receiving positive
response from customers that SM STEEL is implementing the quality of products
such as the flatness of plate at the world's highest level.
SM Steel's Gunsan plant was
established by Chairman Woo Oh-hyun's will to create a business that will help
Korea in the field of steel and basic materials. Thanks to the acquisition of
all 9 classification
certificate, it is expected to increase the proportion of sales of
high-end and premium plates by 30% domestically and
abroad. Overall, we expect to be able to supply more than 55,000 tons of
stainless steel to domestic and foreign customers this year."
