News: SM Steel shipped ultra-wide 3,750mm STS plate
- Substitute for imports of ultra-wide STS (stainless steel) heavy plates, which were entirely dependent on imports
- Demonstrates global competitiveness as a producer of ultra-wide STS plate “SUPER Plate”
SM Steel (CEO Kim Ki-ho), a manufacturer specializing in stainless steel plates, held a shipping ceremony for ultra-wide 3,750mm stainless steel plates on May 2. Ultra-wide STS plate is a high-quality steel material used in the manufacture of large structures such as shipbuilding, offshore plants, and STS thick steel pipes.
When manufacturing such a large structure, using an ultra-wide thick plate has many advantages, such as less welding and increased processing efficiency. Accordingly, it is possible to provide advantages such as cost reduction effect, quality improvement of the finished structure, and safety enhancement to customers.
Recently, as the facilities of domestic and foreign oil & gas projects have been enlarged, the demand for ultra-wide STS plate is increasing. The ultra-wide STS plate up to 4,000mm is so wide that only Japan's NSSC and Belgium's INDU Steel can supply it. SM Steel is joining this ultra-wide market with POSCO's materials.
After successful production of 3,550mm wide stainless-steel plate for the first time in Korea in October last year, SM Steel has been continuously expanding the supply of ultra-wide STS plate products. The ultimate goal is to produce 4,000mm ultra-wide STS plate.
Woo-jeong Park, CEO of Shinchang Special Steel Co., Ltd., who took over the shipment that day, said in a congratulatory speech at the shipment ceremony, “In the meantime, we had to use imported products for ultra-wide materials, which took a long time to deliver and there were various difficulties due to long-distance movement. This time, I am very happy to be able to procure 3,750mm wide ultra-wide products domestically and to be the first shipper at the same time.” Shinchang Special Steel is a mid-sized company in the stainless-steel industry that has been in business for 16 years, focusing on stainless steel bars and steel plates.
SM Steel's Research Center Director Song Gwan-bok said, "Ultra-wide STS plate products are a result of the combination of POSCO's steelmaking and rolling technology and SM Steel's post-processing facility capabilities. We plan to continue to develop ultra-wide areas up to 4,000mm wide products in cooperation with POSCO engineers.”
SM Steel has been using the product brand “SUPER Plate” since July last year to emphasize to customers that its STS plate is the best in the world in terms of quality and specifications.
